Block Access to Your Server or Website with a .htaccess or iptables Blocklist
The IP addresses and CIDR ranges in these blocklists are for use in Apache Web Server based websites.
The .htaccess blocklists apply to people who have websites hosted by web hosting companies, using Linux/Apache based web servers, which are shared with other customers. There may be tens, or hundreds of other websites hosted on one server box and you only have control over your own domains, which are hosted on that server. Maybe you have a forum, or blog, or classified ads section that is overrun with scammers or spammers and want to keep them out. Or, perhaps your website is getting probed for vulnerabilities by other servers under the control of hackers, or your content is being "harvested" or "scraped" by competitors, or by other websites who steal your good content to use as their own. Might be you want to block an entire country from your website, or forum. In order to control who is and isn't allowed to access your web pages you can create or edit a special server file named ".htaccess" - inserting specific text "directives" that either allow or deny access to visitors based on their IP address. More details about the use of .htaccess are given on the blocklist pages.
While the .htaccess blocklists are useful for blocking access at the individual website level, there are times when it is desirable to block access to the entire server. This would include all access to the http, ftp and email portions of a web server box. The best way to block all access to a Linux based Apache web server is to apply iptables deny rules to the Linux APF Firewall. The IP addresses and CIDR ranges in the iptables blocklists are for use in Linux APF server firewalls, via included iptables. The iptables blocklist can only be applied by a person with Administrator privileges on the server. If you lease or own a dedicated or VPS server, running on Linux or Unix, and have Root access, you can apply the iptables blocklists to its firewall.
NOTE: None of these blocklists will work on Windows IIS based web servers. Windows does not recognize the directives or formats of our blocklists. They would need to be converted into a format that Windows Servers do understand.
If you are ready to proceed and you have a website hosted on a shared Apache based web server, go to the .htaccess blocklists.
If you are ready to proceed and you have Root access to a Linux based Apache web server, go to the iptables blocklists.
